POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME

Introduction: The Graduate programme in Microbiology is designed to meet the demands for specialists in various fields of Microbiology, particularly in Medical, Environmental and Physiological Microbiology.

Objectives of the Programme: The programme aims to provide an intensive training for intending specialists in Microbiology and also to contribute to the production of high level manpower.

The Degree to be offered: The department offers

- M.Sc. in Microbiology based on a minimum of one year study which shall include course work and written examination, and a thesis research

- The Ph.D. degree is purely by research and requires a minimum of 4 semesters beyond the M.Sc.

Admission Requirements: For the M.Sc. degree a good honours degree in Microbiology or a related field but not below Second Class Lower Division. The related fields include Agriculture, Biology, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Food Science, Public Health, Pharmacy and Medicine. Undergraduate deficiencies may be made up by offering remedial courses without credit. Candidates for the Ph.D. degree must meet the standard laid down in the University regulation.

Details of Programme
(a) Course work: Students are required to enroll for a minimum of 24 units of courses. The minimum total course work required for all candidates is 24 units in one academic year, where one unit is equivalent to one hour lecture weekly or 3 to 5 hours practical weekly (15 hours of lecture of 45-75 hours of practicals).
