The Department of Microbiology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife at inception was carved out of the former Biological Sciences with about 100 undergraduate students and a core teaching staff of 3. The Department now accommodates over 900 undergraduate students, 87 postgraduate students and a teaching staff of 22. The Department is also involved in some service courses available to other students from cognate Departments and Faculties.
The Department has a long tradition spanning over thirty years of
academic excellence as she offers a high quality learning experience in
a conducive environment. The Department is committed to motivating
students to achieve their goals through formal and informal but
well-structured platforms including provisions for counseling in career
and entrepreneurial orientation for application of knowledge economic
principles. This has made her unique in lecturer-student relationship
for qualitative and functional turnout of graduates in the discipline.
The main goal of the Department, therefore, is to offer excellence in
teaching, research and service to the community. This goal is
vigorously pursued and achieved by attending to the educational and
welfare needs of the students, and the research and career needs of
staff within the departmental capability to make student products
complete graduates required for the future leadership requirements of
the nation and the world at large.
In the high sense of our service in the turnout of functional graduates, the Department has trained students who have been offered appointments in teaching, research and all other areas requiring human resources both within the Department, the university, and beyond including the Diaspora. Indeed, the Department of Microbiology has been regenerating herself for the service of humanity. We also maintain a wide range of useful and cordial partnership with colleagues and relevant users of our products both within and outside Nigeria. We are proud to humbly conclude that we are one of the best in the country.
