Dr. Nkem Torimiro is the Acting Head of the Department of Microbiology at Obafemi Awolowo University. She holds a B.Sc. degree in Botany from the University of Port-Harcourt, Port-Harcourt, Nigeria; M. Sc., PhD in Microbiology and Master in Public Health (MPH) higher degrees from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

She is a Reader (Associate Professor) and a Bacteriologist specialising in medical and public health microbiology, and her professional work includes the detection of infectious agents as well as antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

She pioneered the study of nanotechnology in the department and has three patents awarded by the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the area for rapid detection of infectious agents in water, timely detection of post-harvest food deterioration to prevent food loss, and nanotherapeutics for the treatment of multidrug-resistant pathogens in chronic wounds.

She is also passionate about global health security and training the next generation of BioSafety and Biosecurity professionals to build a critical mass of professionals. In addition, she is a global mentor and a subject matter expert in biosafety and biosecurity with certification in Biorisk Management, Biosecurity, and Biological Waste Management.
